Member of Technical Staff – Full Stack
Location: London, remote for the right candidate. Compensation: Competitive with equity. How to apply: Send CV to fergus.finn@doubleword.ai
We’re hiring a software engineer to help us build better AI infrastructure. Our systems are deployed in real products and used in production, so reliability, clarity, and maintainability matter.
We’re looking for someone who can lead internally — who improves engineering culture by example, brings clarity to technical decisions, and cares about building systems that are easy to reason about and evolve over time.
You’ll join a small, high-trust team, with the autonomy to take ownership of complex problems and influence how we build, test, and ship software.
What you'll do
- Design and implement backend infrastructure that supports live systems
- Lead technical work streams: set direction, improve architecture, and make decisions that last
- Improve engineering quality across the board — from tests and tooling to APIs and data models
- Drive internal standards for code quality, reliability, and maintainability
- Contribute to a shared understanding of how our systems should evolve
What we’re looking for
- Experience shipping user-facing software, ideally in a startup or fast-moving product environment
- Experience setting technical direction or owning architecture for a team or system
- Strong software engineering fundamentals — experience across multiple languages and environments is a plus
- Clear thinking and strong judgment about engineering trade-offs in production systems
- A desire to lead through code, review, and collaboration — not just abstract ideas
Nice to have
- Experience working with Rust
- Experience with Kubernetes or modern container infrastructure
- Familiarity with open-source generative AI tools or deployment patterns
- Experience building or maintaining systems used by other engineers
What we don’t need
- Deep specialisation in one area — we value generalist engineers who adapt well
- Novelty for its own sake — we care more about building the right thing than the most clever thing
- People who optimise for certainty — you should be comfortable making decisions in ambiguity, and changing course when the evidence changes
